What to Wear for Flash Photos
Hard flash is picky about clothing. It blows out shiny fabric, flattens black, and makes some colours glow. A few choices make the difference between a sharp photo and a washed-out one.
Matte beats shiny
Satin, sequins, patent leather, and anything glossy throws a bright hotspot straight back at the lens. Matte cotton, wool, denim, and suede hold their texture under flash.
Mid-tones and saturated colours photograph best
Pure white blows out and loses all detail; pure black turns into a shape with no texture. Deep reds, blues, greens, and earth tones keep their richness and often look more vivid under flash than in daylight.
Keep accessories away from your face
Reflective jewellery, glasses, and metallic bag hardware near your face will catch the flash and pull the eye. Wear them, just not clustered right by your chin.
Can I wear all black to a flash photo?
You can, but add one texture or a single accent colour so you're not a flat silhouette. A black leather jacket over a coloured top photographs far better than head-to-toe matte black.
