How to Take a Group Photo That Doesn't Look Awkward
Group photos go wrong in predictable ways — someone's blinking, the lineup is too flat, or the lighting is uneven across the group. Each has a simple fix.
Take more than one shot
With more than 3-4 people, the odds that everyone has their eyes open in a single frame drop fast — always take at least 3 shots in a row.
Break the straight line
Stagger people front-to-back and side-to-side rather than lining everyone up shoulder to shoulder — it looks more natural and fits more people into frame.
Watch flash falloff across the group
Since flash intensity drops off with distance, people in the back row of an uneven group can end up noticeably darker than those in front — try to keep the group at a similar distance from the camera.
