Nightclub Photography Tips (Phone or Camera)
A club is close to the worst possible lighting: dark, coloured, moving. The photos that work lean into that instead of fighting it.
Use flash and get close-ish
Without flash, everything is motion blur. With flash, you freeze the subject against the dark room and the club lights become bright streaks and dots behind them. Shoot from about arm's length to two metres.
Shoot people, not the room
Wide shots of a dark venue come out as a black rectangle. Tight frames of one or two people, lit by your flash, are the ones that look good and tell the story of the night.
Take three, keep one
Expressions and eyes-open timing are unpredictable under a sudden flash. Fire a quick burst every time rather than one careful shot.
Won't using flash in a club annoy people?
A quick flash for a photo of your own group is normal. Avoid repeatedly flashing toward the DJ, performers, or strangers who haven't agreed to be photographed.
